Declare cancer a national disaster, Govt urged

A section of leaders from  Nyandarua County is calling on the government to declare cancer a national disaster.

Nyandarua County Women Rep Faith Wairimu Gitau and Deputy Speaker Zachary Mwangi Njeru said the number of people dying of cancer has greatly increased.

They said there is dire need for enhanced cancer screening for both children and adults so that detection is made early enough for adequate treatment.

Ms. Gitau further urged the government to initiate intensive research on farm inputs such as fertiliser that have been linked to increased cases of cancer.

She called for a statutory ban on food products found to with such dangerous chemicals to avert the disease spread.

She was speaking at Elnino Village in Nyakio at the weekend when she visited Peris Nduta, an 11-year-old girl who has been suffering from cancer for the last four years.

The minor’s lips have peeled off while her face became disfigured as efforts by her mother to seek medical attention turned futile as she could afford the high cost of treatment.

Her mother, Margaret Wanjiku, intimated thst she depends solely on casual and menial jobs so can it afford to get her daughter any treatment or medication.

She narrated how the disease began as a simple pimple which they ignored not knowing that it would be the start of her agony.

However, through the help of the County Women Rep, she has since been able to get diagnosised though she is yet to start treatment.

The two Nyandarua leaders reiterated the need to properly equip county hospitals to boost early detection and affordable treatment of cancer.
