A section of Thika Road motorists were stuck in traffic for over 2 hours on Saturday morning.

Some took to Twitter wondering what had caused the snarl up while others warned fellow motorists to avoid the superhighway at all costs.

What’s happening on Thika road?” one David Sango posed while another Twitter user Bradshaw Maina said: “A SafeBoda ride would really slap right now. Avoid Thika Road at all costs.”

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had announced that a section of the Thika Superhighway would be closed for 5 days starting August 21.

The closure at the Garden City Mall that is in effect until August 25 is to allow for the erection of a footbridge.

Motorists have been advised to use exit 8 at Kasarani, follow the Babadogo road and join Thika Road via the Outering road.

Those headed to Thika will be diverted to use the alternative routes behind Mountain Mall.

KeNHA has asked motorists to exercise caution around the work areas and adhere to the traffic directions given my traffic marshals.

Earlier this month, the section of Thika Road was closed at at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

The closure was also to allow the erection a footbridge whose construction had been ongoing for several months.
