Thousands of cars stuck at Mombasa port over delayed number plates

Close to 7000 vehicles are being held at several container depots in Mombasa following delays in issuance of registration plates by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)

Speaking to the press on Friday, 13th January, the Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK) National Chairman Mr Peter Otieno expressed his disappointment with the government agency for delaying the process.

Otieno further lamented that importers are incurring massive losses of more than Ksh. 19.4 million daily in storage costs despite car dealers having met all the requirements including payment of tax to both KRA and NTSA.

While expressing concern over the state of the vehicles that continue to get damaged in the freight containers, the CIAK chair proposed that car dealers be provided with unique registration numbers given exclusively for showroom operators to allow them to move their vehicles from the containers.
