Thousands turn up for Diabetes walk
The 11th edition of annual Safaricom Diabetes walk took place today, Saturday, with over 16,000 participants turning up to participate.
The walk is aimed at raising awareness on the need for early detection and management of diabetes, as well as raise funds for the prevention and treatment of the condition especially among low income households.
The walk was flagged off by Cabinet Secretary of Health Hon. James Macharia and Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore with a clarion call to the public to have regular checkups for early detection of the condition.
The walk takes place at a time when the country has been recording increased cases of diabetes especially among children as young as 4 months.
A report by International Diabetes Federation Atlas 2014 further states that Kenya recorded 775,200 new cases of diabetes last year alone.
This year the walk aims to raise 25 million, up from the 16 million shillings raised last year.
