Three charged with drugging, robbing woman over Ksh.300K

Three suspects were on Wednesday arraigned in a Nairobi court and charged with drugging and stealing Ksh.370,000 from a woman in the Central Business District (CBD).

Bernard Mbatia Maina, Harrison Nyamu Gunda and Edgar Mwandisha Mwangesha were accused of administering a stupefying drug, benzodiazepine, to clearing and forwarding sales agent Patricia Wanjiku Warugongo.

The court heard that Ms. Warugongo was on July 17, 2019 on her way from seeing a client who had paid her Ksh.370,000 in cash when she ran into the first accused person – Mr. Maina – who pretended to ask for directions to a children’s home.

Mr. Maina then reportedly administered the stupefying drug on Ms. Warugongo before leading her away from the crowd to a building near Uhuru Park where he was joined by the other accused persons, Mr. Gunda and Mr. Mwangesha.

The trio was also charged with stealing the victim’s handbag valued at Ksh.2,500 containing her personal effects and documents.

Mr. Gunda was further charged with handling stolen property.

The court heard that, on the same day, at around 3:40pm, he dishonestly received or retained a lady’s handbag containing personal effects, documents and Ksh.291,300 in cash knowing or having reason to believe them to be stolen property.

The three denied the charges before Milimani Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot and were released on a Ksh.300,000 cash bail each.

The case was set for mentioning on August 7, 2019.
