Three children drown at dam in Nyahururu

A swimming expedition turned tragic after three children drowned at a dam in Nyahururu town.

The trio, all aged between 11 and 15 years, were swimming at an abandoned quarry situated within Nyahururu Golf Club when the incident happened on Sunday evening.

According to residents, the boys had spent the better part of the day playing within the field when they decided to go and swim.

They undressed and left their clothes and shoes at the banks of the quarry when two of them dived into the waters before the waters began overwhelming them.

However, after discovering that his colleagues were drowning, the third boy jumped into the waters in an effort to save them but he also stuck in the muddy waters and drowned.

A boy with whom they were playing raised an alarm attracting members of the public within Kasarani village.

They managed to retrieve the bodies of two boys but it took over seven hours to retrieve the third body at around 1:00am on Monday.

Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi and Assistant County Commissioner Wambui Irungu, who witnessed the rescue mission, described the incident as unfortunate saying concerted efforts will be put into place to ensure the area is fenced off to avert similar incidents.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to Nyahururu County Mortuary.
