Three Children killed in Kapedo blast

Three children died near Kapedo Town in Tiaty, Baringo County on Tuesday after an explosive device they were reportedly playing with went off.

The device is suspected to have been left behind during an operation by police officers in Kapedo, which had come hot on the heels of the massacre of 21 police officers by bandits late last year.

The three, a 14-year-old girl and two boys aged 14 and 11, were reportedly grazing cattle at a field near Kapedo Town when they came across an unknown object.

The children started playing with the object, oblivious of the fact that it was dangerous.

The device went off killing the three, all from Solar Village in Tiaty Constituency, on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Baringo County Police Commandant Peter Ndugu said he learnt about the incident late in the evening and called upon members of the public to exercise caution when they come across such devices.

The bodies of the slain children have been taken to Kabarnet District Hospital mortuary.

Kapedo area is littered with shells of spent bullets believed to have been used by bandits in the area.

Another massive 120mm-long undetonated bomb was also found a few kilometers from the scene.

The bomb was, however, detonated by a bomb expert.
