Three dead after quarry collapses in Juja

Three people died and one other was injured on Wednesday evening after a rock fell on them at a quarry in Kalimoni Ward, Juja, Kiambu County.

The four had reportedly gone to buy stones when heavy rains began pounding the area, prompting them to take shelter under a protruding rock in the quarry.

Oblivious of the risk they had taken, the four remained in their shelter until things took a tragic turn when the rock dislodged from the ground crushing them.

Juja OCPD Patrick Manyasi confirmed the incident saying only one person among the four was rescued and rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital while the other three died on the spot.

According to the farm manager, there were no workers at the quarry, popularly known by residents as ‘Gwa Kagwe, who would have saved the victims.

“We had gone home when a passerby who witnessed the incident called us but before we got to the scene, three had died. We called police who took hours to collect the bodies. The survivor was rushed to Thika level 5 hospital,” said John Mwathe, the farm manager.

The bodies of the three were taken to General Kago Mortuary in Thika.
