Three suspects were on Monday arraigned at the Embu Law Court for running an extortion syndicate targeting men.

Under the trio’s scheme, it is said a woman allegedly invited men to her rented room, where a man would storm and accuse the target of sleeping with his wife and solicit payment.

Virginia Wanjiru Njagi, Erick Ngugi Bundi and Kelvin Mwenda Kathenya appeared before Principal Magistrate Robert Mundia.

The accused were charged that on April 10, 2024, at Macky Apartment Gwakwegori in Embu West jointly while armed with a wooden stick robbed a man Ksh.11,100 and immediately after the time of robbery used violence on him.

In the second count, the three were also charged on April 11, 2024, at the same apartment jointly while armed with two knives and a dagger robbed another man Ksh.1,700 and used violence oh him after the robbery.

In the third count, the three were also charged with wounding the second man.

Kathenya was separately charged with falsely presenting himself to one of their targets as the Inspector of Police station at Itabua police station.

The court heard that Wanjiru lured men into the apartment where the two men appeared and claimed the man was having an affair with her. They then solicited money from the men.

They denied the charges.

The three were released on a Ksh.500,000 bond with surety of similar or cash bail of Ksh.200,000.

The case was set for pre-trial on July 16.
