Three Kenyan fishermen detained in Uganda for tresspassing

Three Kenyan fishermen from Nyandiwa Beach in Homa Bay County are presently being detained by Ugandan authorities for allegedly trespassing.

The fishermen were arrested while on a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria and were taken to Hama Island in the neighboring country where they are being held.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Suba South sub-county Beach Management Unit (BMU) network Chairman William Onditi said the Ugandan security personnel also confiscated two boat engines and fishing gear of unknown value during the arrests.

Mr. Onditi added that the officers then raided Sare Beach in Homa Bay where they confiscated two boat engines worth over Ksh.400,000 and took one to Lolwe Island in Uganda.

He further decried alleged frequent harassment of Kenyan fishermen in Lake Victoria by Ugandan and Tanzania authorities, urging the government to step in and put out the impending conflict.

Area police commander Richard Cheruiyot said they are waiting for an official report from the BMU leadership over the incident for necessary action.
