Three people trapped as pit latrine collapses in Nyeri

Three people are trapped in a pit latrine at Kiandu Secondary School in Nyeri County.

The three were digging the pit latrine when the walls caved in on Wednesday afternoon, burying them under layers of soil.

The incident is believed to have been caused by the ongoing heavy rains.

By morning, they had dug about 37 feet and were hoping to sink the latrine to 50 feet.

Rescue operations by the Nyeri County Fire brigade, the Kenya Red Cross and locals are still ongoing.

Two excavators are also at the scene helping in the rescue operation.

One of the workers, Samuel Mungai, who was at the scene says they have been at the site for two weeks.

He said the three who were in the pit noticed some soil caving in but by the time those above went to get a ladder down, more soil caved in covering them.
