Three shot dead in protests against Uhurus Supreme Court win

Three people, among them an elderly woman, were shot dead on Monday during demonstrations that erupted following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Uhuru Kenyatta’s October 26 repeat poll win.

All three, two in Kibera, Nairobi and one in Migori were allegedly shot dead by anti-riot police who were called in to rein in on the chaos.

The elderly woman from Kibera succumbed to bullet injuries at around 2pm on arrival at St. Mary’s Hospital.

“The woman was doing her business as usual and she was struck by stray bullet  in the abdomen. Instead of alerting neighbours, she went into her house and by the time she was rushed to hospital, it was too late to save her,” said one of the residents of Katwekera area.

The Supreme Court ruled that the two petitions seeking the annulment of the October 26 election had no merit.

“The court has unanimously determined that the petitions are not merited. As a consequence, the presidential election of 26 October is hereby upheld as is the election of the third respondent (Kenyatta),” said Chief Justice David Maraga.
