Three suspects accused of killing Machakos clinical officer detained

Three suspects accused of killing a clinical officer in Kithimani, Machakos County, were on Wednesday remanded for 14 days to allow for completion of investigations.

Franklin Mbithi, 30, Samson Kataka, 34, and Bernard Mang’ong’o, 33, were arraigned at Kithimani Principal Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects, appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe, were accused of murdering Paul Kyoko Nzoka – a clinical officer at Kisiiki Health Centre (KHC) – on November 26 and disposing his body in River Athi.

Yatta Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Masaka Wanga sought more days to detain the trio pending investigations and his request was granted.

The three will now be remanded at Matuu Police Station until December 18, 2019 when they will be produced before court for mentioning of the case.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday by DCI detectives in Matuu following a report filed by the deceased’s wife on November 30, 2019.

Among the items recovered when the three suspects were arrested include a rope supposedly used to strangle the victim as well as his damaged phone.

Franklin Mbithi worked with the deceased at KHC and they are believed to have had professional disagreements; his vehicle is also alleged to have been used to pick up the victim and drive him to his death.

Bernard Mang’ong’o was a nurse at Ikombe Level 2 Hospital in Yatta and is said to have been called in to assist in disposing the body of the deceased.

Samson Kataka, on the other hand, is a businessman at Kithini market said to have been hired by Mr. Mbithi to effect the murder.

Mr. Nzoka’s spouse, who resides in Embu but had gone to visit him in Matuu, previously told police that he went missing on November 26.

She stated that she arrived at his rental house only to find it locked, further adding that she couldn’t reach him on phone either.
