Three women arrested with fake Ksh.102 million in Ruiru

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Wednesday arrested three suspects with fake Euros amounting to Ksh.102 million.

The three; Rose Wambui, Mary Muthoni and Tabitha Muhuha, were nabbed with the fake currency at a house in Githurai Kimbo, Ruiru, Kiambu County in an intelligence-led operation.

According to the DCI, the money —  over 880,090 in 100 fake Euro denominations — had been stashed in a strongly locked safe box.

“A thorough search in the house occupied by the three ladies led the detectives to a suspicious strongly locked Safe Box. They managed to unlock it later & found the over 880,090 Euros (fake) in 100 denominations,” said the DCI in a statement.

The fake currency was secured and kept as exhibit pending arraignment of the three suspects, as further investigations continue.

This comes a few hours after four suspects were arrested, still in Ruiru, following a botched robbery attempt at a Barclays Bank ATM. The suspects were identified as Hillary Ng’eno (KK Security Runda), Jared Nyang’au (G4S Ruiru), Douglas Momanyi (bodaboda rider) and Jacob Barasa.’

According to the DCI, the four had attempted to empty the ATM several times with no success.

“A mobile phone they were using to make contact with a source and a nylon sack they were to use in loading the money and a motorcycle they were to flee on were among the seized items,” the DCI said.
