Tom Wolf: IPSOS poll reflects true perception of Kenyans

IPSOS lead researcher Tom Wolf says that the report they released on Wednesday reflects the true perception of Kenyans towards corruption.

According to him, the company chose to conduct the poll based on the increased number of corruption scandals revealed recently.

“The questions we asked were driven by the current situation in the country,” Wolf said said on Citizen TV‘s Day Break show on Thursday.

Tom Wolf further defended the report saying that the sample size of 2016 was enough to get an average of the population’s perception on the issue of corruption.

“We know from the science of sampling statistics that 2000 samples is more than adequate to get the general perception,” he told Waihiga Mwaura.

Mr. Wolf further said that they did not suggest any politician’s names to their respondents while conducting the survey.

On his part, Lawyer Steve Ogolla echoed the researcher’s sentiments adding that it is necessary for leaders to be scrutinized.

“If you cannot be scrutinised then it means the public is participating in governance based on rumors and guesswork. The thing with opinion polls and the law allows it, is that it captures perception,” the advocate said.

Mr. Ogolla further noted that corruption cases take long which may be why a majority of Kenyans who took part in the poll do not believe that individuals will be prosecuted.

“If you drag someone to court claiming to have been involved in corruption then you must establish that claim and that process can be very intricate and a long process,” said Mr. Ogallo.

“If you want to deal with corruption adequately then you must deal with the perception part of it,” he added.
