KeBS MD, 32 top KRA officials arrested over contraband goods

Embattled Charles Ongwae, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS) Managing Director has been re-arrested.

Ogwae was arrested alongside 32 top Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and  KEBS officials over allegations of allowing contraband and contaminated goods into the country.

“The following officials of KRA in Mombasa have been arrested for willingly permitting the release into the market, a consignment of substandard Thai white rice,” said DCI on twitter.

Mr. Pole Mwangemi, a Port Health official is also in custody.

The officials are currently being questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.

Among the senior officials from KeBS are Mr. Erick Chesire, Mr.Martin Nyakiamo, Mr. Erick Onyango, Mr. Peter Ndungu, Mr.Daniel Kimonge Mr.Roy Mwanthi Mr. Karim Dharamshi Mr. Felix Makau Simon Mr. Bassam Hakem and Ms. Irene Githendu.

Officials from KRA include Mr.Kiprono Bullut, Mr.David Mbogori, Ms. Dorothy Wanja, Mr. Michael Juma and Mr.Ahmed Dhahir

According to the DCI, the suspects will be charged on Monday with abuse of office and neglect of official duty.

Detectives from DCI are also looking for other suspects connected with the release of the said consignment of Thai rice into the country.

In June, Ongwae alongside other KeBS officials were arraigned over two cases; importation of sub-standard goods into the country and fake import standardization mark (ISM) stickers.

They were each freed on a Ksh.5 million bond each and a surety of a similar amount.
