Top Nairobi County boss slapped with fine 5 times bribe amount

A former boss of the Environmental Operation in Nairobi County has been fined Ksh.450,000 for receiving a Ksh. 90,000 bribe.

“Robert Kiriago, was nabbed by EACC detectives receiving the Kshs. 90,000 during a sting operation,” a court was told.

The money was part of Ksh.140,000 he demanded to allow a complainant to continue with evacuation without an approval letter.

He tried to hoodwink the complainant claiming that the money would serve to withdraw a case filed at a Nairobi court against the complainant.

The officer was found guilty on two counts of corruption namely: soliciting and receiving a bribe; on one count one for soliciting Ksh.140,000, he was fined Ksh.100,000 or would face a one year imprisonment.

On the second count of receiving a benefit of Ksh.90,000 he was fined Ksh.250,000 or face a jail term of one year.

He was slapped with a further mandatory fine of Kshs.180,000 being double the amount he received.

The penalty follows the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act (ACECA), 2003 which says:

“If the conduct that constituted the corruption offence results in both a benefit and loss, the mandatory fine shall be equal to two times the sum of the amount of the benefit and the amount of the loss.”

Police Officers

Meanwhile in Makueni, two traffic police officers were arrested in yet another sting operation.

This was after members of the public complained to the EACC South Eastern Regional Offices in Machakos that police officers using a probox were collecting bribes in Wote and Kathonzweni and Wote Makuyuni.

Following the allegations, the EACC officials decided to take action and it was confirmed to be true.

“The detectives undertook an operation today and arrested the two Traffic Police Officers, Bernard Kamau and Paul Bolei.”the statement read.

The police officers were nabbed with Ksh.3,000 worth of bribes and will be arraigned in court next week.
