Traders protest shooting of lorry driver

A lorry driver was shot Saturday morning along Naibor Road by the Administration Police for allegedly failing to stop at the commercial weighbridge when he was ordered to do by police.

This caused a standoff between the sand traders from Nyeri and the police manning a weighbridge as traders held demonstrations to protest the killing of the lorry driver.

The traders’ association Chairperson claimed that they are frequently harassed by police manning the weighbridge, while sand traders from Laikipia are favored.

“We are paying a levy of Ksh500 per trip which is while Laikipia traders pay Ksh200,” he lamented.

Nominated lawmaker Sarah Lekorere, who was caught in the traffic snarl up, urged authorities to deal with the matter quickly and amicably.

Police were forced to disperse the rowdy crowd using teargas.

Area OCPD Kipchumba Kirui stated that his team would look into the matter, adding that there is no rivalry between Laikipia and Nyeri County.
