Traffic Police Officers Arrested for Bribery

Ethics and Anti corruption Commission (EACC) officials have arrested three traffic policemen for taking bribes from motorists along Eldoret – Webuye road.

The three, Peter Githeki, John Kipkerio Kiptarus and Gilbert Kiptoo Cheserek were arrested with Sh30,500 in denominations of 50s and 100s.

The suspects tried to resist arrest but were overpowered by EACC officials.

According to EACC North Rift region Deputy Director Charles Rasugu, the officers were collecting and keeping the money in a private vehicle at the scene.

ESCAPE

Mr Rasugu said one officer managed to escape when EACC investigators approached them on location.

"The current operation has been prompted by numerous complaints and outcry from the public over corruption on busy roads," said Mr Rasugu.

The suspects are held at Eldoret Police Station as investigations continue after which they will be arraigned in court.

The arrest comes a week after four other traffic police officers were arrested at Salgaa roadblock along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway for taking bribes from motorists.

The arrest made last week was part of a 7am operation by anti corruption officials in Nakuru to tame corruption on the roads.
