Tragedy as ten killed after Lamu boat capsizes

Ten people died after a boat they travelling in capsized in Lamu County on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Reports reaching the Citizen Digital Desk indicate that those who have perished include one man, five women and four children aged between 10 and 17 years.

The boat, which was heading to Lamu East from Ndau Island, is said to have been overloaded with 16 passengers and 50 bags of cement on board when it was overwhelmed by high tides along the Mkanda Channel.

Confirming the incident, Lamu County Commissioner, Joseph Kanyeri, said that six people have been rescued so far by local divers and maritime officials, with the rescue operation officially called off.

The bodies of the deceased were removed to Kind Fahad Hospital, but will be discharged shortly for burial since the victims are Muslims and their tradition dictates so.
