Transport paralysed by floods in Muranga

Transport has been paralysed in parts of Muranga County following closure of a major road linking Murang’a town and Kiria-ini in Mathioya constituency.

The authorities closed the road following the heightened risk of a land slide due to the county’s topography and the ongoing heavy downpour in many parts of the country.

The bridge linking the two towns has also been condemned after massive faults emerged making it impassable.

“We have agreed to close this road because we better inconvenience people due to the time they are arriving at their destination than them not arriving at all and therefore we are appealing to road users to kindly use the alternative roads that we have,” said Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

At the same time, River Maragua in Murang’a also burst its banks sweeping across roads, farms and homesteads leaving the residents counting their losses.

Murang’s County has been hit by the wrath of mother nature after five people died in mudslides on Friday night — four in kiharu constituency and the other one in Mathioya.

Residents of affected areas have since been advised to move out of their homes especially those occupying sloppy areas to escape the risk of further landslides.

Murangá county government also announced a ban on quarrying in the county until the current weather conditions subside.
