Treasury releases Ksh.14.5B funding for public schools

Treasury has released Ksh. 14.5billion for public schools under the free basic education programme.

Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education on Friday confirmed the disbursement.

“Some Ksh.13.2billion has been sent to secondary schools under the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) while Ksh. 1.2 billion has been sent to public primary schools under the Free Primary Education programs,” a statement from the ministry said.

Schools are scheduled to reopen from October 12 following six months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Education CS George Magoha said the progressive re-opening will begin with pupils in Grade 4 and Class Eight as well as students in Form Four.

All schools are required to ensure mandatory use of face masks, monitoring of the body temperature for all learners, staff and all other persons accessing the schools, hand washing and observance of high levels of hygiene.

Where there is no running water, schools have been advised to ensure sanitisers are available.

“Although physical distancing will remain a challenge, it should not be used as a bottleneck to keep any child away from school,” he added.

According to the Education Ministry, all schools that were used as quarantine centres have already been fumigated under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.
