Trees shortage force pupils to learn in open fields

Tilak Primary School pupils have been forced to learn in open air due to the few number of trees in the school compound.

According to the head teacher, Mr. Vincent Onege, the school had received a 24-hour closure notice from the Ministry of Health to allow demolition of 11 mud-walled classes.

Following the demolition order, parents were forced to take their children back home to prevent any damages affecting them, as advised by the Ministry.

One of the parents, Emmanuel Rotich, asked well wishers to chip in and help in setting up new structures in the school.

“Our Member of County Assembly (MCA) from Kapenguria Ward should let the Ksh 28 million set aside for the Ward development be used in construction of our classes so that children can resume learning,” said Rotich.

The head teacher said the number of learners in the school was 1,300 and is now seeking help from the County Government to set up new structures.

“The effect on the children is huge. We are trying to learn under the trees but the situation is worse for them. The mornings are cold and the days very hot,” said the head teacher.

The two were speaking Friday, September 16 at the school in Kapenguria, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
