Trump applauds Kenya in 30-minute phone call with Uhuru

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday evening, 6:15pm, received a phone call from United States President Donald J. Trump.

We understand Trump-Uhuru phone call lasted nearly 30 minutes, after which the US leader received his Presidential Daily Briefing from the intelligence community.

The two Heads of State talked about a number of issues, including economic partnership between the US and Kenya, measures to curb terrorism in the East African region, bilateral relationship between the US and Kenya, among other issues.

Trump also applauded Kenya’s commitment in the fight against Al Shabaab terror group.

The following is readout of the call as released by the White House:

“President Donald J. Trump spoke today with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya to reaffirm the strong bilateral relationship between our two countries.  The two leaders discussed our economic partnership and mutual dedication to overcoming terrorism and other regional security challenges through close cooperation.

“President Trump expressed appreciation for Kenya’s significant contributions to the African Union Mission in Somalia and recognized Kenyan troops’ sacrifices in the fight against al-Shabaab.  The two leaders also discussed ways to boost bilateral trade and investment in Kenya and the broader East Africa region.”

Trump had on February 13 spoken to Presidents Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Mohammadu Buhari of Nigeria.

Trump and Buhari talked about security in West Africa.

The US Head of State spoke with President Zuma about expanding bilateral trade between South Africa and USA.

Uhuru was the third President from Africa, after Buhari and Zuma, that Trump spoke with on telephone.
