Trump campaigns in Virginia, urges minorities to vote for him

U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Saturday (August 20) reached out to African-American and Hispanic voters, vowing to restore law and order and revive industry and agriculture, in an effort to raise support from America’s largest minority groups.

“The people hurt most by our open border are low income Hispanic and African-Americans who are competing for jobs and community resources against new arrivals,” Trump said, saying the Republican Party needs to do better outreach to the African-American community. “I want our party to be the home of the African-American voter once again.”

Trump attacked his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, who won the nomination in part thanks to her large victory margins among minorities in nearly every state, including overwhelming support from African-Americans in the U.S. South.

Clinton leads Trump by 8 percentage points among likely voters, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Friday (August 19).

The Aug. 14-18 survey showed 42 percent of Americans supported Clinton ahead of the Nov. 8 general election. That compares with 34 percent support for Trump. Another 23 percent of likely voters would not pick either candidate.
