TSC on a mission to sensitize teachers on performance contracts

The Teacher Service commission (TSC) has embarked on sensitization mission for principals, head teachers and stakeholders in the education sector on the importance of signing the Performance Contracts as a measure to counter the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) advisory to teachers not to append their signatures on the documents.

TSC Commissioner Salome Gichuru said that the idea of moving across the 47 counties is to demystify the negative perception that has been created about the performance contracting which she says is aimed at improving education standards in the country.

She stressed that the contracts are only signed by school heads and principals and not individual teachers to assist in supervision and improvement of education standards in learning institutions.

Teachers will only be required to sign the appraisals which will evaluate them in terms of performance based on their capabilities and environment.

Gichuru said that teachers’ unions have misinformed their members about the process.

She said that the contracts will help head teachers and principals supervise teachers in their various centers while teachers will sign performance appraisals and development tools.

Gichuru said that the program has already been rolled out in various counties with the aim of improving education standards for the betterment of the Kenyan child.

The commissioner, however, raised concerns about the lack of understanding by most teachers regarding these policies.

This comes just a day after TSC cautioned KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion against misleading teachers not to sign the performance appraisals.

In a statement to newsrooms, TSC Director of Communication Kihumba Kamotho said that teachers are employees of the commission and report to it.

Kamotho disputed reports that an agreement had been reached between KNUT and TSC to suspend the exercise.

Sossion is being accused of inciting teachers not to participate in the appraisals exercise. He is also reported to be on a mission to rally members of the TSC to collect one million signatures to petition the government to kick out the TSC commissioners.

Teachers’ unions’ officials across the country have continued to protest performance contracts and appraisals, saying teachers cannot accept the contracts when there is still a dispute concerning the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
