TSC terminates relief teachers contracts

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has terminated the services of the 70,000 relief teachers it had recruited last year.

In an internal Memo signed by the acting Director Teacher Management Mary Rotich, the services of the teachers have ended.

“This is to advise you that the relief teachers engaged should not continue their services after the expiry of the three months contract,” said Ms Rotich.

The statement dated December 30th, 2015 is directed to all the TSC County Directors.

It also emerged that some of the relief teachers who were recruited after teachers unions obtained a court order suspending the exercise shall not be paid.

This comes even as the country’s 30,000 head teachers in public institutions will be required to sign performance contracts from this month.

In a directive, Teachers Service Commission Secretary Nancy Macharia further ordered head teachers to appraise tutors annually.

According to the circular, the appraisal of head teachers who number about 30,000 will measure integrity, teaching standards, national values and resource management.

The appraisals will also inform decisions on promotion, training, assignment as well as deployment to administrative positions.

TSC is, however, invoking the TSC Act of 2012 which mandates it to monitor the conduct and performance of teachers.
