TSC to employ 5000 teachers annually, Nzomo says

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairperson Lydia Nzomo has called on Principals and Head teachers to help maintain industrial peace as negotiations on Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) go on.

Speaking in Machakos Teachers College where she had had met with Principals and Headteachers from six counties namely Machakos, Makueni, Nairobi, Kitui, Kajiado and Kiambu, Nzomo added that the government has plans to employ 5000 teachers annually, and that 10,000 more will be promoted as they have stayed in same job group for long.

She also called on the ministry heads in the counties to limit the opening of new schools, as this will cause more teacher shortages, adding that new schools should be opened where necessary.

Nzomo cautioned the heads on levy and fees collection saying that it should be done in a manner that wont interfere with the normal learning in schools.

Kiambu KNUT Executive Secretary Michael Ndungu Muna said that teachers remunerations should be up to date as most teachers live in poverty and cannot afford to pay fees for their children, leave alone living in better housing as house allowances given makes most of them live like slum dwellers.

Muna also called on the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to stop mistreating teachers by holding their pay, as some have not received their dues up to now.
