TSC to promote 10,000 teachers in a months time

Approximately 10,000 teachers, including primary schools headteachers, are set to move at least a job group higher in two month’s time.

According to Teacher Service Commission CEO, Nancy Macharia, teachers from job group L and N will benefit from the promotion exercise.

She said that the teachers’ employer will also recruit an additional 5,000 teachers to ease the shortage and address the teacher-student ratio.

Ms Macharia said: “For this year, we will have received money to employ 5,000 teachers but the shortage still stands at 87,489. We need an additional 39,913 in primary school and  47,556 in post primary institutions.”

Speaking during the ongoing 12th Kenya Primary School Heads Association Conference, she added: “In the 2016/17 financial year, the commission has been allocated about 2.2 billion shillings, part of which will be used to promote teachers in job group L and N.”

TSC will also advertise 6,000 positions in job group L and 4,000 positions in job group N.

In the last three years, the government has been employing about 5,000 teachers annually to meet the growing demand in the schools.
