Tujus meeting with Nakuru Jubilee aspirants turn chaotic

Jubilee Party Secretary General, Raphael Tuju, had a rough time calming down party aspirants from Nakuru County congregated at the county offices to iron out thorny issues ahead of party primaries scheduled for Friday, April 21.

Tuju had attended the meeting to respond to their queries regarding party preparedness and logistical preparations ahead of the exercise.

Trouble started when Nakuru East Member of Parliament, David Gikaria, rose up to ask a question but was shot down by other aspirants who were unwilling to listen to him, accusing him of attempts to plant individuals in the county elections board with a motive to rig the nominations in his favour.

It took the intervention of Anti-Riot Police to save Gikaria and his Nakuru Town West counterpart, Samuel Arama, from the angry aspirants charging towards them.

The aspirants demanded that Tuju commits himself to free, fair, transparent and credible primaries.

They demanded an assurance from the Secretary General that ballot papers will be escorted by police, serialization of ballot papers, an audit of votes cast and transparent recruitment of returning officers, presiding officers and polling clerks.

In response to queries raised, Tuju disclosed that the party has set aside Ksh 13.5 million to hire ballot boxes from IEBC that will be fitted with tight security features that would assure the integrity of the polls.

He also assured that ballot boxes be escorted by police from the party headquarters to the polling stations.

“Ballot papers from Nairobi will have a police escort to the constituency tallying centre and from there to the polling stations. At the polling station it will be guarded from April 20 at night up to April 23 so that by the time it is delivered to us there will be no questions about it,” said Tuju.

Additionally, the ballot papers will bear photographs of the aspirants.

The Secretary General cautioned aspirants against engaging in acts of violence saying it will lead to automatic disqualification.

He said that Jubilee Party has liaised with IEBC in order to ensure that those disqualified from running on the party ticket will not have the chance to run as independent candidates.

Tuju said that more than 200 accredited observers will be deployed to monitor the primaries across the country.
