Turkana artistes protest ‘discrimination’

A group of artistes from Turkana County protested along the Lodwar-Lokichogio Road over what they term as mistreatment and lack of participation in the forthcoming Turkana Cultural festival known as Tobong Loree.

While carrying placards, the artistes comprising of musicians, dancers and DJs marched to the Turkana County department of youth where they demanded an address by the in charge County executive Committee Member. Unfortunately, they did not secure the address.

The artistes are complaining that they have been denied a slot to showcase their talent adding that this is not the first time they are being sidelined.

The artistes complained that the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture had already invited artistes from Nairobi and other parts of the country to perform at the event and they would be paid handsomely compared to the artistes from the area.

The artistes further added that they would not be able to showcase their culture through dances, songs and skills which they say is the main theme of the event.

The Turkana Cultural Festival, Tobong Loree, is expected to kick off next week from the 24th to 27th with an estimated 5,000 visitors from other counties expected to attend.
