Turkana, Pokot leaders want Ruto, Sang ICC case terminated

Leaders and elders from West Pokot and Turkana counties held special prayers for Deputy President William Ruto and radioman Joshua Arap Sang as their cases resume at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The leaders and elders converged at the Nakwamoru village in Turkana South where Pokot Council of Elders Paramount Chief John Mwok led the special prayers that were attended by over 500 persons including West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, West Pokot Women Representative Regina Nyeris, Turkana South MP James Lomenen and Turbo Member of Parliament Elisha Busienei.

The leaders want ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to terminate the case against Ruto and Sang saying that Kenya has healed from the 2007/08 Post Election Violence.

Ruto and Sang are accused of directly or indirectly fueling the 2007/08 post poll chaos that left at least 1,300 people dead and over 600,000 others displaced.

The leaders argue that the DP has been vibrant in the reconciliation process and ICC should consider terminating his case so as he can continue with his peace mission.

Turkana South Legislator James Lomenen said that Kenyans are in a better position to administer justice compared to the ICC.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto unified the Kalenjin and Kikuyu communities alleged to have fought during the 2007/08 Post Election Violence. The ICC should let Ruto free since the case ended after the two communities united,” said Lomenen.

Elder John Kalemelech reiterated that President Kenyatta and DP Ruto did not contest for the presidency in the 2007 General Elections and were used as sacrificial goats to shield the real culprits.

The elders condemned the ICC of ‘forcing’ the Ruto, Sang case saying that there was no sufficient evidence to sustain it (the case).

Ruto and Sang are currently at The Hague seeking to convince ICC Judges that Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has no case against them. A favorable ruling will see the case dismissed but an adverse ruling will see the two go through another round of court room contest.
