Turkana, Pokot residents fleeing following fresh banditry attacks

Hundreds of residents from Nasolot Sub Location along Turkana – West Pokot Counties border are fleeing the area after fresh attacks that left two herders dead at Lami Nyeusi and more than 200 livestock stolen.

West Pokot County acting County Commissioner, Khalif Abdulahi, confirmed the attack saying more police officers have been deployed in the area to quell the situation.

The police are providing escort to travelers passing through the area on the Kapenguria-Lodwar road.

Sources on the ground indicate that more than 100 suspected Turkana armed bandits camped at the Parkeywo hills for three days monitoring the neighbouring villages before laying the ambush.

The fleeing residents urged the government to restore peace and end cattle rustling menace in the area adding that their daily economic activities have been disrupted as they live in constant fear of retaliatory attacks.

Wilson Lonoki, head teacher at Sarmach Primary school said that the perennial cattle rustling has affected the education sector as Kambi Karaya
and Nasolot  nursery schools   have  been closed for years.

The head teacher said that the government has been slow to respond to such incidents leaving the locals to protect themselves.

A 20-year-old man is nursing gun wounds he sustained from the banditry attack at Kapenguria County hospital.
Hellen Losikumul, wife to one of the killed men, now widowed with seven appealed to the government to compensate the affected families.
