Turkana protesters block road over power blackout

Business came to a standstill in Lokichogio town, Turkana County as agitated residents protested over a three-week-long power blackout.

The angry residents marched to the Kenya Power offices, seven kilometers from Lokichogio town after they complained that the power company had failed to take any action.

They blocked the Kenya – South Sudan Highway by lighting fires and barricading it with poles and stones.

A caravan from south Sudan that was ferrying refugees to Kakuma, was stranded for hours until armed GSU officers intervened to contain the situation.

Residents complained of their businesses incurring huge loses while hospitals faced difficulties in administering drugs and further challenged the government to find a long-term solution to the fault.
