Turkana residents facing starvation due to biting drought

Over 5,000 residents from Lokwamosing in Turkana East are facing hunger and starvation due to the current drought affecting the region.

Turkana County’s county executive commissioner (CEC), Charles Lokyoto, who is in charge of disaster management told Citizen Digital on Tuesday December 6, 2016 that the county is planning to send relief food to hunger-stricken residents in various parts of Turkana.

He said: “Drought and hunger in Turkana is very serious to the extent that over 30,000 pastoralists in Turkana West, Turkana North and Loima have moved to Uganda to search for water and pasture”.

He added that residents are moving their animals to areas with better pasture because they continue to register losses due to lack of food and water.

Gabriel Logialan, a resident, said the county government has delayed to give them relief food, adding that the last time they received it was three months ago.
