Turkana South, East get four conservancies in bid to boost security

The Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT) has opened up four conservancies in Turkana South and East that will be under Kraal leaders to help conserve the environment.

Furthermore, the conservancies will help in providing security along the porous borders through patrols conducted by trained conservancy rangers under the command of the NRT.

Over one hundred reformed bandits have received paramilitary training at Manyani Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Law Enforcement Academy alongside the KWS personnel.

In addition, the conservancy work will provide an alternative livelihood for the warriors.

More reformed warriors are expected to undergo training to boost the  security along the porous borders of Turkana South, East and along the Kitale – Lodwar  highway.

Similar conservancies are already operational in Pokot, Samburu and Baringo.

According to a Kraal leader of Lokichar James Lokomolinda, it will be easier to coordinate security activities along the borders and along the main highways.

He further assured motorists and passengers of safety when using the Kitale- Lodwar road; a road that has suffered major highway banditry attacks.

Lokichar MCA, Raphael Loperito, commended the NRT and the County Government of Turkana for providing an alternative livelihood for the reformed bandits.
