Tuskys board appoints interim CEO

The board of Tuskys supermarkets has now confirmed that the chain’s CEO has stepped aside and his deputy George Gachwe appointed on interim basis.

Speaking to Citizen TV at the franchise headquarters on Mombasa road, board chairman Dr John Kago said they condemned Tuesday’s incident saying it was embarrassing and uncalled for.

The chair further indicated that the board had no issues with the CEO, terming the issues raised by the “3rd generation group” as petty.

The chairman further clarified that the “children” acted on their own volition, adding that the matter is under investigation.

“We are taking this matter seriously and we will get back to you when investigations into the matter are complete,” said Kago

By the time this article was published,  the 3rd generation had not responded to our inquiry.

There was drama on Tuesday at the Tuskys head office as Retail supermarket chain Tusky’s CEO Daniel Mwangi Githua was thrown out of the franchise headquarter offices by a group that appeared to be the grandchildren of the company’s founder Joram Kamau.

The group calling itself the 3rd generation accused the CEO of defying a termination letter issued to him on January 23rd 2015 and signed by four directors.

They accused him of running outsourcing firms Artemis Africa Ltd and Artemis Sourcing Ltd which they claim he uses to exploit the Tuskys Company, with Artemis Africa Ltd being used to supply labour force to the company.

The 26-year-old retailer hired Githua as part of the process of injecting professionalism into its operations as it prepared to list on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Founded in 1990 by the late Joram Kamau in Rongai town, Tuskys has grown to be the second largest retailer in the country after Nakumatt, with 52 branches in Kenya and Uganda. Until 2007, the retailer went by the banner Tusker Mattresses Limited.
