Hundreds of workers have been rendered jobless after the Tuskys Supermarket Magic branch situated in Nakuru Town closed shop indefinitely this past weekend.

The workers who were up in arms over this decision cited the lack of payment of salaries by the employer for the past 4 months.

Over 70 workers employed on contractual basis were issued with termination letters since Saturday October 31, 2020 with those on permanent basis ordered to remain home awaiting further direction.

The workers say the issuance of termination letters caught them off guard at a time when many of them had sacrificed to keep going to work despite the delay in salaries.

They now want the retailer to remit their salaries before dismissal.

The abrupt closure of Tuskys Magic branch, one of the pioneer branches of the Tuskys Supermarkets, is another nail in the coffin for an indigenous Kenyan retail firm that has been battling a barrage of law suits and auction demands owing to its weakened financial position.

“Hatujapata mishahara miezi minne….tumelala njaa,..tunataka haki itendeke ndio tulipwe mishahara…..tunapewa barua ati duka limefungwa,” said Paul Mwakisha, one of the employees.

Martin Kinoti, yet another, added: “We have been given letters by people we don’t know…this letter is null and void…these people have families, mtu afanye kazi na aende nyumbani bila pay?”
