Two arrested, charged after being found with a knife in Nairobi CBD

Two suspects were on Monday arraigned in a Nairobi court after they were allegedly found in possession of a kitchen knife on Moi Avenue in the capital’s Central Business District (CBD).

The weapon, according to police officers who arrested them, was dangerous and an indication that they had intent to commit robbery.

Charles Marwa and Jackton Ondego, who were arrested on Friday, were charged with preparation to commit a felony contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code.

Appearing before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, the duo denied the charges instead saying they were assaulted by officers from Central Police Station.

Mwaura, who had on an unbuttoned shirt, complained that he was brutally caned by the officers thereby leaving him with head, chest and arm injuries.

He also told the court that the said officers took Ksh.11,300 from him; money he said was not recorded in the case file as exhibit.

Ondego, on his part, purported that the officers put soil in his mouth when he tried screaming for help from passers-by.

The prosecution however told the court that the two accused persons were beaten by members of the public.

The magistrate released them on a cash bail of Ksh.20,000 and directed that they be taken to hospital.
