Two beheaded as gang kills 4 in Mt. Elgon night attack

Tension is high in Mt. Elgon region of Bungoma County after four people were shot dead on Sunday night by an eight-member gang.

The gang, armed with an AK 47 rifle and machetes is reported to have raided Sosi and Saria villages at around 10pm, killing four people, two of whom were also beheaded with the gang walking away with their severed heads.

The thugs, suspected to be remnants of the outlawed Sabaot Land Defence militia also hacked 12 cows to death during the night attack.

According to the residents, the thugs moved from house to house attacking the occupants and killing animals they came across.

One of the residents, Rose Nasimiyu, whose husband was shot dead, said the attackers shot twice in the air before calling her husband, Fredrick Naibei, by name.

Nasimiyu narrated that when her husband came out of the house thinking it was police officers who had raided their home, he was ordered to sit on the ground before he was shot twice in the chest.

Before the killing, Nasimiyu recalls that the gunmen searched his pockets and took away money and his national identification card.

Kimilili MP Didmas Barasa condemned the attack and called on the government to deploy the army in the region, saying over 100 people had been killed in the area in the last six months.

According to the MP, assailants have been acquiring guns from Chebukube and Suam areas at the Kenya- Uganda border before crossing over to Kimilili constituency.

Mr. Barasa called on the immigration officers to be vigilant on the people crossing the border at Chebukebe and Suam areas.

The residents also accused police of laxity, urging Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to come to their rescue.

The bodies of the dead were moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary.
