Two bodies retrieved from the Nairobi river during clean-up exercise

The Comb Green clean-up team working under Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has retrieved two more bodies from the Nairobi river.

The bodies of infants were retrieved at the Korogocho area and the matter was reported to the Kariobangi police station.

So far, 21 bodies have been retrieved since the Nairobi River Restoration Project began sometime in 2019.

The 21 decedents include 16 infants and 5 adults.

Fredrick Okinda, who is leading the clean-up team said the clean-up activity was halted for hours on Monday after they spotted a polythene bag floating in the river.

Upon checking, they discovered a body of an infant stuffed in the bag.

“One of us noticed a paper bag floating around and when he went on to open it, he was shocked to find remains of an infant and minutes later, we found another body of a girl dumped around the same area,” Okinda noted.ro

Following the discovery, Governor Sonko called on the police to be more vigilant noting that the Korogocho area was notorious for abortions with fetuses ending up at the river.

Sonko has called on the police to come up with more concrete solutions that will help nab those dumping babies and those promoting abortion.

“I think the police have a big role to play, l know they have been working tirelessly to curb this vice, but we note that it’s beginning to resurface again. They will need to be more vigilant,” Sonko said.

The issue has also attracted the attention of organizations dealing with children rights who are now calling on young ladies facing abortion temptations to contact them for counseling.

Beatrice Muema, who works with Kangemi Childline Organization, says that they have been issuing counseling services to many women faced with the challenge.

Most of the cases, she says, are about defilement but have been reported to them as teenage pregnancies.
