Two candidates give birth hours before KCPE exam

Two Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates sat their examination papers in various hospitals after they gave birth hours before the exam was set to begin on Tuesday.

A 13-year-old Standard 8 candidate from Lenana Primary School in Narok Town, Narok County was forced to sit the ongoing examinations in Narok County Referral Hospital maternity wing where she had delivered a baby shortly before.

According to Narok North Sub-County Director of Education Kuyo Ole Saoinah, the candidate gave birth a few hours before the exams started.

Kuyo added that the girl was taken to the private wing where she managed to sit her first paper at the same time with the rest of the candidates.

In a separate incident, a 30-year-old KCPE candidate of Bondo Township Primary School began her exams at Bondo Sub-County Hospital after giving birth at the health facility on Tuesday.

She began her paper 45 minutes late as she was still in the labour ward at 8.00AM when the exam was set to begin.

According to the hospital’s superintendent Dr Ajomo Oketch, the patient was brought to the hospital while in labour on Monday  at 10PM.

Elsewhere, a 14-year old Standard 8 male candidate from Esupetai Primary school in

Ewaso Ngiro Narok South Constituency has been given refuge by the school head teacher, Ms Ann Saramei, after he was physically abused by his father who intended to bar him from sitting for exams.

More than 12,000 pupils are currently sitting the national examination in Narok North, West and South Constituencies in the larger Narok County.
