Two children killed, 4 others injured by bees in Kitui

Two children died while four others were injured after a swarm of bees attacked them at their home in Ngangani Village, Kitui County on Thursday.

The bees are said to have emanated from a beehive at a nearby homestead, attacking four children aged between one and eight years, and two expectant women.

The deceased were a four-year-old girl and her brother one-and-half years.

Their cousins aged eight and seven years escaped death by a whisker and are admitted at the Kitui Level Five Hospital alongside the two women said to be the children’s parents.

“We tried to fight them off but the swarm was big and it overpowered us,” said Joy — the mother of the deceased children.

“I watched helplessly as my two children breathed their last breath covered by a huge heap of bees,” she added.

Confirming the incident, Lower Yatta Deputy County Commissioner Jeral Mutuku urged bee farmers to refrain from keeping beehives near homesteads, as drought can drive them to households in search for water.
