Two cops, three students injured in Multimedia University protests

Two police officers and five Multimedia University (MMU) students were on Tuesday, September 27 injured after the irate learners engaged police in running battles while protesting the killing of their colleague by a speeding bus on Sunday.

The varsity students had barricaded the busy Magadi Road paralyzing transport services to and from Ongata Rongai and Nairobi.

The students staged the demonstrations accusing the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) of failing to instill discipline in the matatu industry and especially those plying the Ongata Rongai – Nairobi route.

They claimed that NTSA had ignored their complaints despite visiting Ongata Rongai police station on several occasions.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Multimedia University Student President, Simeon Omoyo Maranga, accused the Ongata Line Sacco Matatu conductors of stealing from students. He claimed that even though the licences of the Sacco had been withdrawn several times, the cars still continued operating disregarding traffic laws.

“No Ongata Line Sacco buses shall pass through this road until we sit down with their bosses and lay down rules,” added the student leader.

He further added that the matatus were notorious for hiking fares and speeding.

Nairobi Deputy County Commissioner, Phillip Lamalisia, urged the students to remain peaceful as they engage the school management on how best to resolve the issue.

“We are calling upon the NTSA to crackdown on the transport company and to let the law take its course. The law is there to protect everyone,” said Lamalisia.

He further added that investigations were underway to establish why some students were injured in the riot.
