Two dead as Governor Lusaka, opponent supporters clash

Two people are feared dead after chaos erupted in Bungoma town when supporters of Governor Ken Lusaka of Jubilee Party and his arch rival, Wycliffe Wangamati of Ford Kenya, an opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) affiliate party, clashed.

According to police, the two groups engaged in violent confrontations after their candidates were cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest in the August 8 General Election.

One woman, identified by her business name, Kadogo, and who sells groceries in Bungoma town was the first casualty after she was roughed up by the irate youth.

The second person is said to have died while being rushed to a nearby health center after sustaining serious injuries.

Trouble started when youth supporting the opposition NASA engaged their Jubilee counterparts who were escorting Governor Lusaka who was heading for a rally at the Bungoma Posta Grounds.

Wangamati had just been cleared by IEBC and had just addressed the residents at the same venue.

Jubilee supporters, who were equally armed with crude weapons, had camped at Bungoma Posta Grounds for a function and had to repulse their rowdy and armed counterparts who allegedly attempted to attack them with sticks.

Several other people are also reported to have sustained serious injuries during the altercation.

Police were forced to lob teargas to disperse the rowdy crowds.
