Two dead, five injured in Migori gold mine collapse

Two people have been confirmed dead and five others seriously injured at Akala Gold Mine in Nyatike, Migori County after the wooden ladder they were using in the mine broke and fell on them, killing them on the spot.

While confirming the incident, Central Kadem Location Chief Julius Sitora said the identities of the injured are yet to be established, even though the incident occurred Wednesday night at 11 pm.

Sitora also added that the deceased and the survivors were prospecting gold in the 300 feet deep mine.

The area chief is now appealing to miners in the area to be cautious while undertaking their activities, especially during this time when the soil is still loose saying that there is likelihood of rockslides in the mines.

He further urged both county and national government to put in place better measures to curb rampant cases of deaths in the mines.

The injured were rushed to Migori Level 4 Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment while the deceased are being preserved at Migori level four hospital mortuary.

This comes just two weeks after irate artisan miners at the Macalder Gold Mine in Nyatike, Migori County held protests over the planned closure of the mine by the government on grounds of it being unsafe.

The move by the government follows recent deaths at different mines, which is partly associated with the prolonged heavy rains.

A total of 22 people have lost lives in the Migori gold mines, with majority of deaths being registered at Osiri Gold Mine, which is a few kilometers from the Macalder Mines.
