Two fishermen die as boat capsizes

Two fishermen died while two others were rescued after their boat capsized near Sori beach, Nyatike Sub County in Migori Friday morning.

Speaking after the incident, Sori Beach Management Unit chairman, Bamrich Okoth, said the 3AM incident was as a result of heavy tides.

“The deceased, identified as Owino Zakayo, 44, and Alfred Otieno, 36, were unable to swim across and the rescue teams were unable to reach them before the unfortunate incident occurred,” he said.

Migori Deputy County Commissioner James Mabeya said operations to retrieve the bodies from the lake are still ongoing.

Mabeya urged fishermen to use protective gears such as live jackets to avoid tragedies.

Less than a month ago, a similar incident occurred at Lwanda beach in Nyatike where two fishermen died and four others survived after their boat capsized.
