Two fishermen drown in Lake Victoria

Two fishermen drowned in the waters of Lake Victoria on Tuesday evening after their boat capsized near Lihungu beach in Rarieda sub-county following strong winds.

According to West Uyoma Beach Management Unit Network Chairman Alfred Odhiambo, Joseph Ochieng and Samuel Angaga were on a normal fishing expedition alongside three other fishermen when their boat capsized.

He stated that the two men drowned while their colleagues managed to swim towards the shore before they were rescued by other fishermen who were also on the lake.

Mr. Odhiambo added that the body of Ochieng’ had already been retrieved from the water, further adding a search was ongoing to recover the remaining body.

He blamed negligence for the increasing accidents on the lake, noting that most fishermen have often failed to take precaution while on their normal fishing expeditions.

He advised them to always ensure they put on life saving jackets while on the lake to avert such untimely deaths.
