Two herders surrender firearms for registration in Isiolo

Two herders have surrendered their rifles to the Isiolo County Commissioner for registration following a directive by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery that all illegal firearms in the hands of members of the public be registered.

Mohamed Abdirashid Ibrahim surrendered a M16 rifle with one magazine and four rounds of ammunition while Daudi Abdi Birik, surrendered a G3 Rifle with four magazines and 64 rounds of ammunition to Isiolo County Commissioner George Natembea Wednesday morning.

Natembeya lauded the decision by the two herders to willingly present their weapons for registration and called upon those still possessing illegal firearms to follow suit. He expressed optimism that more people will register their firearms in the near future.

He assured Isiolo residents that the government does not intend to disarm any community but to know the number of firearms at the hands of members of the public in every village.

The County Commissioner also said that such information will help the government when recruiting locals into the Kenya Police Reserve (KPR), as they will be sure which areas require support from the government in terms of additional ammunition.

The two firearms now bring the total number of registered rifles in Isiolo County to thirteen.
