Two inmates dead as cholera outbreak hits prison

Two inmates at Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu have now died following a cholera outbreak in the facility.

According to Kisumu County Chief of Health Luci Ojwang, 26 others are now undergoing treatment at Kodiaga Health Centre.

This comes even as a cholera outbreak has struck Katsaka Kahiru Internally Displaced Persons camp in Witu Lamu County.

According to the camp’s coordinator, Masha Iha Mitsanze, 20 children are among the people have been affected by the outbreak.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, an IDP living in the camp said the cholera outbreak is a result of poor hygiene conditions in the facility.

According to Mitsanze, the camp is home to 1,500 locals who were requested by the national government to relocate and allow the military to flash out Al Shabaab sleeper cells in Boni Forest after a series of Al Shabaab attacks in Pandaguo and Jima areas in Lamu County.

Lamu County is yet to give an official statement on the matter through its County Executive Committee member in charge of health.
